I love a good game of pretend...

School: Morgan was the teacher; the deer, bear, dolls, Paige & John Martin were the students. You should have heard them... it was a hoot! See info on rug below. {you can click on this picture to see it bigger on flickr}

school

Shortly after I snapped the picture she realized she wasn't "dressed the part"... according to her, teachers always wear short-sleeved dresses with jackets over them... and running shoes. :)

teacher

Much better. :) They were playing so sweet and I was so happy for them... until I walked into their bedroom and this is what I found.

dresser

Do your kids do this when they dress themselves? It makes me want to scream... and then it really makes me want to scream when Justin says, "Why can't the girls room stay picked up... there are always clothes all over the floor?" I try to remain calm and remind myself of this precious seaon of life... mom would remind me that my room looked like this when I was in high school... I might should get used to this look {and convince Justin to also}!

The little man is getting bigger and so are his eyelashes. I can assure you these did not come from my gene pool.

lashes

Do you know of a sweeter scent than Johnson & Johnson's baby wash? Me neither. Ok, well maybe Johnson & Johnson's baby lotion... it's a toss up!

I do not have my new camera yet... remember, that's what the BIG GARAGE SALE {March 7th} is for. We haven't taken Dave Ramsey courses but we are debt free, except the house... which is killing us so don't pat me on the back. I'm afraid to take Dave Ramsey courses because then we would probably sell our house, I'd have to resort to buying generic Nutrigrain bars and I'll be walking around with an envelope of cash... ok, just teasing {kinda}... but I know what he does to you! It's enticing and frightening all at the same time! Our parents were gracious enough to pay for our educations and my smarty pants husband had a full ride at FSU for grad school... all of this allowed us to start our marriage free of debt. So while it's been very tempting to put the new camera on a credit card and pay it off post-garage sale... I'm trying to be a good wife and faithful steward.... which means I'm still shooting with my Canon PowerShot {pictured above}. It's been a good little camera but runs on AA batteries. I swear I've invested as much money in batteries as I would have spent on an SLR. Oh well!

A few of you have asked about the rug in our den. I mentioned it before but maybe you missed it... I've had a few emails so here it is again: Shades of Light: Vibrant Kilim in BEIGE. It's a wool kilim and we will have it the rest of our lives. It was pricey {but that's always relative... it was pricey to me... Ms. Cheapskate} Erika convinced me to buy it several years ago and Justin nearly faints still when he recalls the price tag.

See you later alligators.

Love the school scene! My sister used to line up canned goods on the hearth and "teach" them. She would cart them with a little toy buggy back and forth to the "school room". {The worst part is that she would say my parents "killed" Beans or whoever when we ate them!}
And those eyelashed are to die for! How come boys are always the ones with the lashes?
I'm excited about your camera for you and know that you will most definitley love it! I'll have to live vicariously for a while until I can get my own garage sale together! I wish I could be there!

My kiddos still allow me to dress them, but my little lady now has a rest time in her room during nap time and it always seems a tornado has gone through. We too live debt free minus the house and now a car, but we should have it paid off within the year. I do do the envelope thing though. It's the only way for us not to go over, ha!

Love the pretend school! It looks like they play so well together and including John Martin is a big plus! I had no idea what school teachers wore in today's classroom. Thanks for the tip. wink wink!

They are too cute...my daughter plays school and does the same thing...drags out all of the supplies to "set up" the scene...AND her room looks just like that when she gets to dressing herself..she will be 4 in May...and she has the same jacket as Morgan...isn't it cute? It washes well too...I love the rug as well..we have two labs so for now ALL of my rugs come from Lowe's until another season of life b/c they spend time outdoors too! JM is precious...and I too, love the scent of J and J...I really love the ole' school pink lotion...my favorite...that is what I am using on my 6 week old baby boy...he smells like Heaven...have a good afternoon...off to put clean sheets on the bed and then to Kindermusik! oooh, just looking at that "clothes tornado" sends chills up my spine. my 5yr old does this, too. she told me one day she had "played store" in her room...when I went in-all of her clothes in her closet were hung all over the upstairs (still on hangers) so "customers" could look around and see what fit. i am OCD about their closets and have everything organized by dresses, long sleeve shirts, short sleeves, pants, etc...so to have it all over in disorganization, looked like a 2hr job to me to get it back, as opposed to a "store" like it looked to Devin!
ps-what color is morgan's room?
Happy Tuesday!

I will agree that my room looked the same way for most of middle school and high school.
Poor girls...I bet they send you up a wall sometimes. But, they are adorable.
JM's eyelashes are crazy! I'm jealous. He won't ever need lash primer!

I loved playing School. Remember playing in Anne's basement! Those were the good ole days. And yes, your room was always a disaster, the apple does not fall far from the tree. Kiss JM for me. Those lashes melt my heart.

Just lately I've told my kids that all I do is walk in a giant circle picking up the same things over and over...clothes and toys, clothes and toys. I do make them help, but it's never the same! Kate and our sweet neighbor friend play in her room and unmake the beds (she has two twins)to put their babies down for naps. That has to be my biggest pet peeve - coming in to unmade beds that I've already made that morning!

John Martin is yummy - his eyes will melt many hearts for sure. My boys have wonderfully long lashes (actually Kate is blessed with them too!) and all they have to do is look at me the right way and I give in to most anything :)

TAKE THE CLASS!! Dave would not have you sell your house. The fact that you are debt free right now is huge. I promise you FPU would be a good thing and you would not have to buy generic Nutri Grain Bars (all though they are probably pretty good).

When Gabe was about 2 I put mascara on his lashes and took pics...highly recommend it before he gets to old to protest :0)

My girls do this to and it also drives me bananas and irritates the stew out of me. I recently found these little gems http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90050590
at Ikea and it has helped immensely with keeping the dressers organized. Very inexpensive yet a fabulous product nonetheless. You will want them for every dresser in the house.

i love that smell too.. however I love the lavender scent for my little man.... I too cannot do dave ramsey because I will loose an envelope that is supposed to be our food for he month or something.. however I sometimes tend to over spend, so we decided on an amount and at the beginning of each month I buy a gift card for walmart and krogers and that has to get me through... it has worked REALLY well... and I even have some left over.
Oh by the way... you know you played school with your cabbage patch dolls.. are those still even around?

Av's room looks like that almost everyday and I cleaned up a similar mess just this afternoon! How can she change clothes that many times a day?!?! See you Sat!

That is so cute! My sister and I used to do the same thing! (And my room was always like that too!) I want desperately to make it to the yard sale, but my husband will be just home from 2 weeks in Peru and it'd be pretty mean of me to take off "shopping" instead of spending time with him! We live in FL, not too far from your sis, so it'd be a whole day away from him. Post whatever doesn't sell and maybe someone (like me) might buy it. You never know! Oh, and those lashes are awesome!! Both my kids have them and like you, they aren't from me. Good luck with the yard sale!

Hey Darby! I am a good friend of Shireen's and she has told me about your incredible friendship. So I have to admit I've check out your blog a good bit. I just want you to know how encouraging, uplifting, inspiring and fun it is!! I love looking at it, getting ideas, feeling normal (being a mom) and just being encouraged. Thanks for sharing and for allowing others' a look into your world! blogs are so much fun! Love, Dana Sheheane

It was especially fun playing school after we had spent an afternoon dumpster diving at Wild Rose at the end of the school year because the teachers got rid of all their materials. I think we even scored some grade books! Wow, looking back I can't believe that I ever got into a dumpster....And to think that Clorox wipes didn't exist at the time! Miss you guys!

I did the same thing when I bought my SLR - I saved and saved. We, too, are on the "Dave Ramsey-ish" plan, and I wasn't about to spend that credit without the cash to pay for it! Right now, I'm working on getting my first lens! Just about ready to get it ordered! Whohoo! Your camera will be worth it when you have it and have it paid off!!!

Oh, and the girls' room - makes me second guess my notion to paint the room green; your blue and pink really look fantastic (my Cottontail fabric has sooo much blue in it, but I'm hesitant to paint the room blue! Ah!).

Morgan with her tennies are too nuch! Love her. I used to love playing school. Remember when we used to play like we were sick and we would mix up water and an assortment of candy in my play mixer in my room... we were always up to something. Along with our lemonade sales;) That JM is sooo precious! Except when he's screaming his head off, of course. Miss you!

Oh my goodness. I can't wait to see what you can do with an SLR - your photos are great now! I can't believe you have been using that point and shoot and getting such awesome results! It shows you have that eye for photography. What SLR are you planning on getting? I have a fancy smancy SLR and I just don't have the eye like you do. Occasionally I'll get lucky ;)

Darby, you're hilarious!
Hey, the kilim is reversible...remember, I know rugs! ;) So, tell Justin that you got TWO rugs ;) for the price of one! Erika did well!
JM's eye lashes ARE gorgeous!
And, hey, Dave Ramsey's not so bad. ;) I know you're joking around...I do carry the envelope/cash system, and it truly works for us. Then again, we probably spend more than you anyways! I don't know, we're both Bargain Betty's! :)
You're gonna be a professional photographer when you get that new camera, you know??? :) Okay, I'm going to try to call you, and I am EXCITED to come see you! So, I hope you have talked to J and asked about weekends in my birthday month! ;)

Just wanted to say your blog is adorable.Love how your keeping it real. Just took the plunge on my new camera, tons of reading reviews etc.Went with the Canon Rebel xsi, so I can add some great lens soon. What camera are you looking at?

Yes, Morgan is right about this teacher. I wear sneakers or tennis shoes 90% of the time. But, don't tell her it's because of old age and aching joints...it might spoil her image of me as a cool, hip, fun teacher who does goofy things in class. However, I did have one of the 3's ask me yesterday if I could get up off the floor. Smart kid...I think he could tell I was having trouble...that and all the kids were already lined up at the door awiting their stamp and I was still trying to get to my feet!

Oh, and don't tell her we wear sweaters because of hot flashes...that would be too hard to explain!
