A Rainy Weekend
We were on the receiving end of torrential downpours and thunderstorms in our corner of Alabama this weekend. Fortunately our house sits at the top of a hill so we were high & dry, but when it came time to leave the house we came to the realization that we were landlocked by flooding. Every road out of our area was roadblocked. Later in the day Mom {who just so happened to be delayed from leaving by the inclement weather} and I decided to go for a drive. This is exactly what DaddyBoy would have done too. He too loves extreme weather and anytime we had a snow storm or major thunderstorm he'd be the first one out to survey the damage. We saw a lot of this...
Earlier that morning the girls enjoyed making ciniminis with Mom.And I enjoyed a simple sewing project that I found here.
If you have a serger it is SUPER easy.... sergers tend to do that... make sewing so much easier. I went years without one and now that I have one I often wonder how I managed to make anything! But if you don't have a serger it's still easy!! I made both girls a skirt {I used the smaller template for both}. I changed it up a tad, by:
1. for Morgan {age 4} I added 2 more panels for a total of 10 {for more "twirlability"}.
2. for both girls I added about 1 and 1/2 inches to the top of each panel to avoid adding the "quilt binding" that she used for her elastic casing} I figured their shirts would cover the top of the skirt anyway.
3. I assembled mine by serging all the panels together in a long strip... all 10 lined up. Then I hemmed it {because hemming a straight line is easier than hemming it once it's assembled}. Then I serged the back seam. Serged the top and turned it under for my elastic casing. And added a homemade tag because that helps Daddy when he dresses them.
4. It only took 25 mins start to finish. That's my kind of sewing!
Here's a picture of the inside of the skirt to give you a better idea of what I did.
Have a great Monday... I'm all smiles because Mom is still here!!!!! We love her and hope she never leaves. :) She's informed me she's going to stick around until we get some of these bathrooms finished up. I hope to come to you later this week with some before & afters.

Our posts were titled the same after this rainy weekend! I figured your mama would be staying a bit longer after that weather! Glad ya'll get to spend some more time together:)
I want to be there!!!!
No way - you're actually going to start on the bathrooms!!!??? I CANNOT wait to see what fabulosity ya'll come up with! And BTW, I LOVE seeing pictures of your neighborhood. Since my parents no longer live there, it's fun to get "taken back" to my old stomping ground, since I was a runner, I traveled all those roads many a times!!!!!
I love it! As soon as I'm in my own house and my machine is out of storage! (boo!) I'll be making AG some little skirts for Spring! I love them and they do look easy! {Love the comment about the tags making it easy for daddy!...so true so true}
I have "office envy"! I love your little office/sewing room, and wish I had something similar...except for scrapbooking instead of sewing! Can't WAIT to see how those bathrooms turn out...the rest of the house has been fabulous!
ok so your mom rocks, and don't get me started with your nest. i am typing from the kitchen, with my back to everyone who walks through (everyone) i dream of a nest of my own. i kind of made one off the bedroom but it was too far from the action... need a happy medium. have to be able to hear the kids scream, even if i choose to ignore them! ;-)
Can't wait to see the bathrooms... i'll be clicking on your blog with anticipation every hour!
Hey D! I'm so happy for you that "mom" is still there. Is she going to just stay until May?;) I'm sure you wouldn't mind! Cute skirt! Miss you!
XOXO
I would love to have a space like that to sew. So nice. The rain was quite insane. We spent the week at the Rosemary, but had fun anyway.
love the skirt and your computer/sewing room. you are so crafty!
I am so glad your mom is still there!! Godd for both of you. I am also excited about the bathrooms. Can't wait for the pics.
I must confess...not that it matters ...but, yours is now my FAVORITE blog! Your girls have THE CUTEST haircuts and your son is PRECIOUS! I love your tutorials and I am pretty much in awe of you. Just thought I would let you know!
The ciniminis sound so yummy! I can't wait to see what you have done in the bathrooms!
How lucky that your Momma is still there! WONDERFUL!
I want to sew... I honestly do. But I haven't made an attempt to learn yet. I did get a sewing machine for Christmas 2 years ago. My mother-in-law has used it twice when she was here visiting. That's about all the use it's gotten. That being said... I didn't under stand the first bit of this post about making that skirt! hahah
So excited to see the bathrooms!! WOW!
**GASP**i didn't know you had been working on the bathrooms!! i can't wait to see. i need a surger BAD. i can't believe your mom has been there almost a month!! i don't know what i'd do. (yes i do...i'd take more sewing lessons from her.)
i found your blog on someone else's and i love seeing all the fun things you make. i would love to know how you made the size tag in the skirt. our girls are close in size too and my husband can't remember who's is who's!
OHhhhh! Can't wait to see bathroom makeovers!

The skirt is adorable. The last thing I attempted to sew (a long long time ago) was supposed to be a 1 hour project.(a skirt - by the way) It took me two days to cut the darn thing out and then I finally gave up and made it into a pillow! Ha ha! Luckily for me...my Mom could sew like you!
I love your blog and think your kids are the cutest!!
I have been contemplating a serger...what kind do you have, do you have any recommendations? I have only used one briefly but have loved my projects i've done with one...
thanks!!
That is the such a cute shirt! Do you think you could do french hem if you are like me and don't have a serger?
Can't wait to see your bathrooms.
What an amazing mom and precious little ones. And gorgeous office!
I just came across your blog and I have to tell you how much I've enjoyed reading your entries. What a lovely family! I find your outlook on life very refreshing.
What about that poor puppy that's getting soaking wet?
You know that dogs shrink in the rain, darbs. seriously...you should think about those kinda things :)
I am RIDICULOUSLY excited about your bathrooms. I talked about it for thirty minutes yesterday. Seriously, I might crash your house just to experience it fully.
I feel like I could try the skirt...Maybe it would be more simple than the evil Frannie Baby :) Seems like it would. I still haven't ever done elastic. A whole new medium! But surely it can't be too bad. Miss yall :(
i know you are loving all this extra time with your mom! anxious to see what you do with the bathrooms and are those the fabulous pics of JM i see in the office?? we need to see all the ones you chose ;)
I want to be you!!! (with my children and my husband, nothing against yours, just adore mine) :-) you are a blessing to watch on this blog.
