Delivered

Hello.

We are here! Praise the Lord! And the weather is heaven... I had my coffee on the porch this morning and had to borrow a sweatshirt!

But I need help, I can't decide if our trip would be better defined as
a) the incubation of sanctification
b) just plain torture
c) all of the above

Here's a 35 second taste of our 11 hours and 55 minutes with Hornet. Good thing I love him like I do... that's all I can say.

He was most thrilled about our quick pit stops, where he could find contentment in mommy's arms, and it all came to a screeching halt when we returned him to his carseat.

Happy Friday!

Oh Darby, I had a little one just like that...hated the car seat!!! The minute he was free he was fine. Bless you for making the trip anyway. I know your parents are in heaven. Glad you got there safe and sound! Have a wonderful time.

Really? Is your attitude really this good? Really? Gotta love those babies who hate the car. Really though?? :)

oh sister. i have been there and felt that many a day. some of our first trips with AC were spent with me in the very back with her so i could just hold her and so some serious law breaking b/c she wasn't gonna have it any other way! bless you. i will send you some serious prayers. so glad you don't have to deal with it for 2.5 more weeks.

Darby, I feel your pain! Though probably not quite to the same extent, as I can't imagine making a nearly twelve hour trek with my car seat-hating five month old little dude! Mine reached a new octave while traveling recently with my parents and my dad just about went crazy. says he needs some sort of "nerve pill" because of the experience! May your time with your family more than make up for the terrors of traveling!!

Darby that is HYSTERICAL! We are totally in the same boat. My child does the same thing, so I can completely relate. So glad you made it to your destination safely! Looking forward to weekend pics of hornet and the gang. It's always a treat:)

The funniest thing about your video is that little sweet Paige just keeps looking over at him with her big beautiful eyes!!! (Almost like - "is he REALLY going to do this the whole trip?") Great blog!!!

ah, something to look forward to.

Darby, I've been reading your blog for a while now and I am not sure what it is about it but I love reading about your life. You're the kind of mom I hope to be when that time comes.

p.s: I made your chicken foil packet recipe last night and my husband and I loved it! Thanks for posting such great and easy recipes. I would totally buy your cookbook.

Oh my goodness...I guess 12 hours of crying leaves nothing to do but laugh. So glad you and your husband were able to keep it in perspective! and you were delivered safely. I am sure it's well worth the trip.

Now I know why he is called the Hornet!

Have a wonderful time!

Why. Not. Fly?

I feel your pain. Hopefully the ride home will be easier. We will be investing in a portable DVD player for our next flight for our 20 month old to try and avoid melt downs.

Oh darby! So sorry!! Both of my boys have been that way and its awful- nothing is more stressful than children screaming in the car!!!

Jennifer said...

Maybe you and John Martin will be flying home? :)

Glad you made it safe and sound!

Perhaps it is your car seat? My sister in law had that with my nephew when he was little.. they hade an Eddie Bauer car seat and he screamed and screamed everytime they went away.. they bought a 2nd car seat for their other car but this time it was a Different brand.. she put him in it and he was fine and enjoyed being in the car. Then she put him back in the other car seat and he screamed.. she moved the new car seat to her car and he was fine.. it was the other car seat that was making him scream everytime he was in the car.

I remember these times well..It was back in 1970 We were moving from Jacksonville, FL. to Charleston, S.C. After pouring her entire bottle down my back; while riding in one of those small, small, bucket seats..Our 2 yrs. old screamed the entire 7 hr. trip! Today..she, too, has one that does the same! LOL... OUCH... Enjoy the ride....Glad you have found the weather cooler. Enjoy the 4th!

At least he is adorable, that may help make up for it!!

I love that you and your husband are so calm about it. Did that last?

Oh I feel you! I can't decide if it is better to get them out for the pit stop or just lave them in becasue returning them to their seat is torture! Glad ya'll made it!

cracking me up! glad you're there safe and sound!

Maybe instead of figuring out things to give HIM, the other 4 of you should invest in Ipods and DVD players with headphones so you can just drown out the noise!!!! Glad you are there safely and I know you will have a fabulous time! Glad to see you all laughing - these are the times that make for memories and story-telling in the years to come!!!

Oh my word! I have so been there. Our last wonderful trip as such was on the way home from Cocoa Beach on the way back from a 2nd delayed shuttle launch. H was having nothing to do with the carseat and it was 3 am. THREE A.M. I wasn't quite sure that time existed, but it did that day. We had to stop several times on the side of I-10. Oh my. I'm so glad y'all got there safely! Enjoy your wonderful long trip! That is so great to have a real visit.

Oh Darby, that's rough! While I would love to come hang out at your parents farm, I might not want to sit your lap for that trip :) I can't wait to see the beautiful pictures I know you're going to take!

Bless you, girl! You& Justin must have nerves of steel! And those sweet sisters too, who didn't seem to be aggravated at all! Glad you made it safe and sound. Have a great visit at the farm!

happy late birthday jm.
We recently took a 17 hour car ride in your direction with three little ones. yikes. we thought we would make it in one day but toward the 12 hour all the kids started screaming at the same time. we finally surrendered and got a hotel room. I just kept saying to myself, "This trip better be worth it". And it was. I am sure this week will make all those memories of the car ride dissapear. hey and if you need a pit stop along the way home Becky B and I would love to see you. :)

You poor things! I sure know what that's like--12/13 hours to our extended family in Tennessee...EVERY year for Thanksgiving. I put my foot down last year. Just might do it again this year too. That trip is just plain torture (for everyone). ;) Glad you made it!

Oh my gosh ... Darby ... oh, that is just NOT fun! We are heading into a day of traveling - one hour ride to the airport, 4 hour wait for the plane, 8 hour plane ride. Customs and then finding my mom ... one hour drive from airport to her house. I am hoping and praying that the DVD player battery lasts long enough to keep them somewhat distracted. Because ... I just can't take my son screaming like that ... you guys ... I'm so sorry. I cannot imagine a trip with a little guy sooo unhappy!

Cstargel said...

oh bless your soul!!! I'm glad you are there safely and enjoying coffee on the front porch! Thank God for coffee!!! Can you also have a glass of wine on that same porch?

Our Family said...

Bless you! My youngest is the SAME way!! We're moving cross country this August, and I'm flying on a plane with the kiddos while Daddy drives our stuff for 4 days... she HATES driving that much, for even 10 minutes.
Good luck on your return trip!!

Darby, You and that cute hubbie of yours have nerves of steel. Hopefully this beautiful Illinois weather will make it all worth while. My youngest (who is now 18) H.A.T.E.D. his car seat. He thankfully outgrew it. He's headed to the U of I this Fall. I'll be the only one screaming and crying on the way home from dropping him off! This too shall pass. Cherish this time! It goes so quickly.

Have a great visit and a safe trip home.

Awwww.... poor little guy. Poor YOU!!! :) I know he just turned one, so I'm guessing he's only recently had his carseat turned around. Is it possible that he wanted to sleep and just couldn't while sitting upright? I only mention it because if his carseat is that kind that converts from rearfacing to frontfacing, maybe you could turn him back around to his pre-one-year-old infant position so he could nap more comfortably??? I have no idea. Just brainstorming for *something* to help with the ride back. Hope it goes better!!! One more thought - We have 4 children now, ages 8,7,4.5,and 2. Sometimes we drive a good chunk of the way late at night, just so the children will sleep. Anyway - hope you all have a really great time while you're there :)

Okay, so everyone is probably going to send me hate mail, but....BENADRYL! between that and traveling at night, that is all I got for ya. I had a screamer too. Luckily we were only about 2 hours from family and NEVER attempted anything longer than that. Good luck sweetie...and you do have my sympathy. (mine are 7 and 5 now and it DOES get to be soooo much better)
