Hello Quilters

Dear Quilters,
I have a new appreciation for what you do. I thought I'd just "throw" a little quilt together for the holidays. Ha! There's no such thing as throwing together a quilt for the holidays. And I didn't even "bind it"... because I have 3 kids and that would take stinkin' forever. NOW... I have to quilt it... so anyone want to tell me how to do that? Like... what foot to use and any other helpful hints would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Darby

Just caught you on google reader. Use a walking foot. Best invention ever!!! I've never made a quilt without the binding, and I always quilt before the binding, but the walking foot should be just fine to hold your fabric in place. Stitch in the ditch would prob be the easiest and best for you. Good luck!

I'm certainly no expert but I've made quite a few quilts. You do typically quilt your piece before you put the binding on. The worst part of quilting (in my opinion) is the stretching it and preparing it to quilt. I have an awesome friend who always helps me with that! She has an easy way to put on the binding and that is actually one of the fastest parts.

I would definitely use a walking foot and stitch in the ditch. Once you get the hang of it quilting is actually fairly easy, at least the actual piecing part is. I think the cutting is the worst!

I'll have to send you pics of the quilts I've made for my boys, they have all turned out really well!

Your quilt looks lovely! Since the edges are all finished, have you thought about tying the quilt? Use embroidery floss and tie the quilt in all the corners or centers of the blocks. I only suggest this because when I tried to "stitch in the ditch" after finishing the edge my masterpiece got a bit bunchy... and turned into a really sad looking project. Luckily the recipient loved it anyway cuz it was my first attempt at quilting. Good luck and don't forget to post pictures of the finished project!

hey darby, I have no clue how to help but couldn't help but compliment and commend you for your efforts! you really are a girl from another time!:-) Some of my earliest memories are sitting with my aunt and grandmother while they quilted watching days of our lives! the quilts are now priceless for me and I can give them to my own kids now. Great tradition.

Can't help you, don't even own a sewing machine, but man you are AWESOME!!!! Are you sure you don't have a full-time live-in nanny and housekeeper that you haven't told us about?

Just thinkin' - If Darby is from Venus then I am from Mars. Quilting - girl you are so crazy! I love reading your blog. You have an adventuresome spirit when it comes to the home. I am challenged by the idea of how to make more than five or so things my family eats over and over. You are making apple butter while you quilt. You go girl!

The more I think about this the more I think you will screw it up if you try to quilt it. You could tie it with yarn also. I remember all my aunts quilts that had yarn ties. They were my favorites!

Darby, This is the best quilter I know. You should check out the quilt on her blog (the picture does not do it justice...the peices are super tiny, and it looks beautiful in person) and I am sure she would be happy to give quilting advice. Her daughter and I have been best friends since first grade. She made a gorgeous LSU quilt for Gabe, that I just cherish. Anyway, I am impressed with your projects. Take care.

I've never quilted... my mom's always making a new one (she hand quilts though...). I think tied quilts are cute though! I made a tie blanket for my daughter and it was pretty easy. I have several of the fabrics in your quilt, but for appliques (some I found at Jo-Ann Fabrics, anonymous). Can't wait to see it when you're done :)

A walking foot would be best, but honestly they're expensive. I would thread ties through or just wing it and stitch along the ditch...afterall it is just for snuggling! I love the fabrics you chose!

Your quilt looks beautiful! I love the fabrics that you have chosen! I am going to make my kids some Christmas pajamas out of the same Michael Miller fabrics:) At purlbee.com (Purlsoho.com's blog), they have some wonderful quilting tutorials. I haven't attempted a quilt yet, but I have found some of their other tutorials quite helpful. By the way, I love your blog and your twin sister's blog. Your kids are too cute.

Hello Darby - we have not seen you all in so long. The girls are beautiful and your little one is very sweet. You should see our girls - growing like weeds! If you quilt this on the machine you will ruin all your hard work as it will bunch up. My suggestion, like a couple of others would be to use floss or yarn in some pattern or loosely hand quilt it.

Hi Darby,

Ive been following your sisters blog for ages and now yours! I have a very random question for you but when someone asked me I thought "Darby will know this one." I am hosting an outreach brunch with another mom from our church. We are looking for an activity to do that would serve someone else. ie-wrapping presents for a charity or putting together care packages for troops. Any ideas? We have two hours and the even is Dec 6th. I would be so grateful for any ideas that you may have. You are incredibly creative! I appreciate all of your thought in advance. - Ellen
