Day 15:: It's a SNAP

rose

There's a cold snap coming. I'm fearful that my lovely little rose bushes are going to croak. I pulled this little beauty off yesterday {along with a couple others} and several of my bushes have lots of new growth. Any rose gardeners out there want to advise me as to what to do? Let 'em freeze? Cover them up? Cut them back? We're in the deep south and I planted them last spring, there are 6 bushes and do you remember their beautiful blooms? I'd be a sad lady if they froze to death... the forecasted low tomorrow night is 16.

In other news... d r u m r o l l p l e a s e... John Martin slept 6 hours straight last night! I'm almost embarrassed to report it because clearly at 6 months old and 18+ lbs he should have been doing this long ago! I hope to report such news on a regular basis. He is still a touch under the weather... for those of you with bambinos suffering from nasal congestion I suggest this...

Hooray! I knew he could do it. Bet you all feel better today. Good luck with the roses. In N.C. ours have already died back until spring. All my camillias will be brown tomorrow though. brrrrrr

Congratulations mom. And please don't be embarrassed. Our doctor had to 'lecture' us as well in terms of getting our son to sleep through the night. At 9 months. It's hard!

Thanks for the tip on the vapor lotion. We are all sick out here in Seattle too. ;)

Yay for JM and Darby! I have never seen that soothing vapor wash - I will have to try it - though we deal with more runny noses here than congestion!

Congrats on the 6 hours...that is huge! I have a son that was 2 in August and if we get six in a row I consider having a celebration breakfast for the family---so I am with you on the no sleep. My kids just aren't nappers or night sleepers....and I let them cry it out...and often cry with them...oh well...we are making it :) Take the good nights when they come and celebrate! Your flower is just beautiful!

glad the vapor rub worked.

found your blog through ali wilson's. i grew up in auburn with her husband. saw your profile pic on her comments page and had to click to see it bigger. i've enjoyed reading your blog.

anyway, thought i'd de-lurk to tell you that our dr suggested i give georgia a spray of that 'little noses' spray 3 times a day to help keep all that bratty congestion away. it seems to really help. so thought i'd share.

enjoy the new sleep. and please know that you are NOT the only one up in the middle of the night wondering if you are the only one up in the middle of the night ;)

I was right there with you not too long ago w/Gabe. He didn't sleep through the night until shortly after he turned 1. My biggest thing was I just could not do the whole cry it out thing so upon much research I came across a book "The no-cry sleep solution" and I loved it and I followed the suggestions and he was sleeping through the night about 3-4 weeks after we started it. I'm def going to use it for the next one!

I love your blog, I found it through my sister, not sure how she found you though! I do know that you knew my brother at Auburn-Kyle Armstrong. ANYWAYS-about your roses, definitely cut any blooms you have, cover the bushes and believe it or not, as with most plants especially pansies, water them very well. Sounds crazy I know but it will actually preserve the roots. Icicles will form around the roots which is better than them freezing dry if that makes any sense. Of course, now it's 8pm so it may be too late. I'm not looking forward to the freeze either, we're in Montgomery.

Hooray for JM and for you, too! If you ever need any sleep tips, please ask away. I have plenty of them because I was kind of obsessed with the whole sleep routine thing. :)

Your rose is beautiful - I hope the rest of them survive. Our very own cold snap has arrived - it's -2 right now!

Congrats Mama!! Sleep is still a battle at our house for Peyton, he has never been a good sleeper from day one. I say, start early and nip it in the bud - you'll be glad when he is 3.5 and not having problems going to bed. :-)
In other news... we ALWAYS have a bottle of the vapor bath at our house. I buy it in bulk at Target. Love and sleepy blessings from the Paske crew!!

Hey Darby! We've never met, but it looks like we know a lot of the same people. My husband, Hays, grew up in Dothan. I enjoy reading your blog often, and I am glad your little man slept through the night!

It did my heart good to know that there are roses blooming out there somewhere. :) I hope they survive! And yay for John Martin!!

I am in the Southwest, but here in the rare occasion we get a freeze they say water your plants that day, cover them with something, to the ground. Do not cut back until spring when the threat of frost is gone. The "dead" branches act as an insulator to the plant. I do not have roses, but do this with all of my frost sensitive trees & plants. Good luck!

Congrats on the 6 hours! Woo hoo! Don't feel bad either as my lil one didn't sleep through the night till he was like 2. years that is!

I also found your sister's blog and she too is amazing!!
As for the roses, they will come back in the spring so dont worry too much!! I hope you cut as many blooms as you could and spread them around your house! Lauren
