Day 27:: Get Rich Quick

First, when I do clean my floors {which is rarely} I do not do so on my hands and knees. That picture was totally staged because I could think of nothing else to take a picture of yesterday.

Speaking of cleaning...

This weekend I had a nice little conversation with Marla and Erika about how I could fund a new camera. We discussed which "get rich quick" scheme I would take to fund such an unnecessary but 'oh so coveted' purchase.

It's been decided.

I will have a garage sale.

You won't want to miss it.

My friend Becky did something similar on her blog with her basement... so I'm following suit and hoping my results are equally as impressive and that I can roll in enough dough for a new camera.

Would you like to see my garage? It can fit 3 cars, now it fits 0.

My husband will probably die.

Enjoy the tour...

By the way, contrary to the way it sounds I do not have a retainer in my mouth when I filmed this.

Also, everything is for sale with the exception of the flowered car seat cover. I know someone will want to buy it. Sorry folks!

Ok, you are the cutest! Seriously. It's funny that you posted this because I just posted about cleaning myself. Great idea to fund your new camera, I hope you make hundreds and hundreds!

PS - If I lived closer I would take those wicker chairs off of your hands. :)

thank you for making my laugh! if we had a garage, i bet it would look similar...ben's already told me that we would have to have a one item in, one item out policy:)

This is awesome, Darby! I, too, plan to have a garage sale this spring - it's all piled up in my spare bedroom now. Trust me, just as atrocious. And, I LOVE that you may buy a new camera - I'm sure Erika has talked you into the Cannon. You should do it - will NOT regret it w/ the little ones!

PS. We may have to talk consignment (purchase) of your girls' clothes. Don't forget me if you ever want to rid yourself of them =)

I love that you added the disclaimer about the retainer because I was totally going to ask! LOL

OK if I had youngsters that playground picnic set would totally be mine! I love your garage of trash finds and artifacts -- and I hope you make enough to fund 12 new cameras.

Oh my gosh.
You are freakin hilarious.
I wish my husband would allow me to take those black wicker chairs off your hands... but we took a truckload to Goodwill last week.
Love you... I know you'll make enough $$ for the camera and a great lens! I might even join you, I have enough stuff to get rid of I could fill my cargo trailer full. Does Dothan have a city-wide yard sale?
Love you! Happy organizing!
The "artifacts" crack me up... in the video it looks like a bunch of pinecones, like a squirrel lives out there!

First note, I do feel better after putting it "on paper", thanks for the comment! Second Dont Tell Justin but the atrifacts really do just look like piles of dirt, and rocks! Maybe we should send rager in there with a duster and see what happens!!! Good luck with your new camera! I dont even have a camera so you could always send me your old one! IM making cream cheese toped brownies, I would trade...:)

I can't wait to see the garage with your cars in it!!! I would love to have a nice camera too but the last time I had a yard sale, I said *Never Again*. Never. Say. Never.

mrchrishill said...

We're big garage sale fans. Kristen and I have done it the past three years and made bank every time. It also helps keep your attic/garage clean and even though we think we will never make a dime year after year, we still do.

Thanks for "keeping it real." Good to see a video tour and hear you narrate..

I do wish I lived closer. I would surely buy those wicker chairs. Good luck on the sale!!!!

If the headboard is a queen size, I'll take it! I'm in desperate need of one for my bed :( we also need one for my daughter's bed, but hers can wait ;) I wish I could make a trip over to Dothan...I'd take that picnic table also! Are you making any trips back to Tally any time soon? ;) Don't feel bad about your garage....I feel like my house looks like that! I think I might need to gather things and have a garage sale as well... I'm wanting to do spring cleaning already!

I love your blog!

I would seriously love to know what you'd take for the wicker chairs?
I'm in Montgomery and if the price is right and I can get my hubby to agree, I'd drive down and pick them up for sure!
I'm very serious!
my e-mail is

Thanks!

I really want your wicker chairs!!! I live in Birmingham and could drive down one day to get them! How many do you have and how much do you want for them!?!?! My email is eleanor.oser@gmail.com! Thanks!

I am loving the artifacts! OK- Justin is as much to blame. And seriously- everything including the kitchen sink! That's great! I have a garage to match, so I can commiserate- and laugh! I am right there with you!
We have a big garage sale about once a year and usually make about $1000, so I know you can do it!

Becky Brodbeck said...

YAY Darby! You can do it!! Love ya and hope you make lots of cash for that camera...maybe that's what I'll use my money for too:-)

Anonymous said...

you can not sell that picnic bench. I can only imagine how cute you would fix that up and the precious pictures you would take of your three on it! Other than that I wish you the best with the garage sale!

Devon said...

Kick some tail on this garage sale girl. And then head to refurbdepot.com. They've got some amazing Canon refurbished cameras for good prices.

Hope this works. I say this because I'd like to pay homage to you and Becky, rip-off your idea and then buy my own camera!

Am I crazy or should someone should start an online garage sale website? How genius would that be??? Is that something us mom's can do between the hours of 2-4 a.m. when our kids are actually sleeping?

Loving the wooden lamps, I would take one of the pairs off your hands (do you think they could be painted?)
Let me know $$...Cynthia
cynthiass@yahoo.com
Would you have the time to ship them to me? Thanks!

Ivy said...

If you had time you should look into possibly selling some things on ebay. I had a garage sale recently and the items that I didn't sell I put up on ebay and made some pretty good money!!

You are not alone. We have a "mother-in-law suite" (I would not wish it on an evil mother-in-law)behind our home that is so much worse!
I love your blog, I look forward to your posts everyday! If I did not live in central, FL I might have to buy those wicker chairs as well.

Unknown said...

i love this idea!!!! i'd take those wicker chairs off your hands, but i don't think they'll easily ship to texas. wonder why your camera made your voice sound funny...when you said "sit" it sounded silly heeheehee i'm twelve!

If I lived closer I would purchase the wicker chairs!!!

Hope you make the $$$ for your new camera and how funny your hubby commented!

Darby...anytime AC hears a video, she comes running over to see. She saw this and said, "oh my goodness...she is a pack rat!" She only knows this term b/c Steve says it about me. You should see our guest room right now. I am "supposed" to be having a garage sale this spring. She also told me to "please not bring home anything from the preschool trash..we have enough stuff upstairs"! Thanks for a good laugh and good luck with the sale!

I was going to say I'd take those wicker chairs this summer when I'm home, but it doesn't look like they're going to be around for very long.

Victoria said...

Darby, thanks for posting this! I have just started tackling my basement and my husband is so happy.

I laughed out loud at your picking stuff out of the trash! I do it too and my husband just can't believe it.

If I lived closer I would take the children's picnic table off your hands. It is adorable. The lamps caught my eye too.

Oh and were those white dishes in one of the boxes towards the end?

I am also interested in clothes if you have any that would fit a 4t girl.

Anonymous said...

I'd be interested in your girls clothes ALL DAY LONG :-) It'd be great if you wanted to unload some of those :-)!!

OMG I LOVE this! Thank you thank you thank you. I may have to do a blog post like this on my blog.... if you only saw my garage. It' worse than yours, I promise.

Darby!
I'm back to the blogging world, and I promise to blog SOON, but I had to let you know that I SO appreciate that you CALLED me!!! THANK YOU!!!
We're doing great! I'm finally starting to feel more myself. Russell's not having to lift me out of bed anymore! Yay!! I went for my first stroll yesterday...pushing Rhys in his stroller! :) Russell held me accountable to NOT speed walk, although I was tempted! :) I walked faster twice today! I'm so thankful and praising the Lord for getting better each day, and our little man is wonderful!! :) I look at him and I think of John Martin! They even look alike to me when he makes certain gestures with his face. Oh, I love being a mommy, Darby!!!
Again, thank you, and I haven't called you back b/c I've truly been SO out of it and so busy!! I know you completely understand!
I'll blog soon to update YOU! ;)
Love you!!!

LOVE your idea! when the garage is done...start on your closet! don't forget how much money you can make on your clothes, too!

i own a women's consignment store in MS. Your sweet sis consigns with me and makes great money! (My sister is Erika's friend, Laura.)

There's CASH in your CLOSET!!!

(There's a link to my store blog from mine.)

Can't even begin to tell you how much I loved this. Even showed it to Peter. Now I feel better about my two-car garage.

P.S. My last garage sale earned me $1,500. Despite the fact that a group of gangsta's showed up and openly stole stuff then ran away. You will be shocked at how much you make!!!!

Talk about airing your dirty laundry on the world wide web! Jeremiah definitely would have screened that one. :) Completely kidding. I need to do the same thing with our basement.

Sadly enough, the volume wouldn't work for me, so I didn't get to hear retainer mouth you quiet, studious, wise blogger. I am still laughing

I absolutely LOVED THIS! Totally made my day!! Make us some video of those precious babies sometime :)

Hmmm, I spotted a jogging stoller. I have a nine-month old and we walk (with the exception of fridgid weather and rain) all the time. I have two strollers, but not a jogger (I think was it in defense of when my husband asks, "Don't we have a bunch of strollers?") how much might a yard sale maven want for it? Just checking out my options! If it's really for sale, let me know. beth.parkman@cv.edu

Thanks!

This post was awesome. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the shutters. I've been looking for some for the back of our house since we spiffied it up with our brand new mega porch. But, I just realized that to match the shutters on the front/side of the house, I need the flat design and not the ones with the little slats :(

Hope you make lots of moolah. I think you should offer a couple of your crafty things for custom orders...you'd do great with that.

Caroline said...

i love it!! i dont need anything from your garage but will buy probably anything you make and sell or some of the girls hand-me-down clothes!!

Your hilarious! Let's talk chairs out of the trash! How much girlfriend! Love them!

I cannot watch the video here at work, but based on these comments, I can't wait to get home and see it! I too, am trying to figure out a way to buy a new camera - Wilson broke the flash on my old one, and instead of getting it fixed, I'm hoping for a newer and better one!!!

you need to start a bidding war on those wicker chairs!! you are stinkin hilarious! my attic looks the SAME way.

Oh my, that really was so funny! Kudos to you! We moved from living with my parents (essentially stuffing everything into one room), to a 4 bedroom house with a 2 car garage, and I am in AWE that I can't seem to find space enough! AHHHH! Garage sale as soon as the snow melts!

christy said...

Okay Darby, that is hilarious! Love your blog & love that you are always keep'in it real!

If I wasn't half the country away I would be there for the shutters & wicker cahirs in a NY minute! Can't wait to see the progress & hope you get your camera!

Oh MY! I have to say that
1. I love love love your blog.
2. you're right, I feel much better about my basement right now!
3. I am so happy that I don't live near you, because I'd be first in line for the shutters and the wicker chairs and the table from the pre-school garbage.... I would come to your house and buy all that stuff, and then let it sit in my basement or garage!

Best of luck on the giveaway, and also on the clean-up. Can't wait to watch the progress on your blog.

Ok, so I just watched the video - FINALLY - I've been having some technical difficulties at home with my Internet, but anyways I just wanted to say I LOVE YOUR VOICE!!! I've never met you or talked to you, but we've been "friends" for about a year now and when I finally heard your voice it SHOCKED me - I guess it wasn't like the little voice I hear in my head everytime I read your posts. Please don't think I'm crazy - I only WORK with the mentally ill, I don't really have voices in my head, but you know what I'm talking about - don't you? Well, probably not. I do love your voice though - crisp and clear! Loved the video - and Will just recently cleaned out our garage and it is invigorating!!!!
