Do You Dream?

Raiger

I've always been a big "dreamer". I love to entertain my mind with things I'd like to do. I think this trait comes from my dad. He can come up with some crazy ideas... and usually if he entertains himself long enough with those ideas he'll act on them. Most of my dreams are fairly unattainable. That's why they are usually dreams and not reality. One day soon I hope to be gutsy enough to bring my dreams to fruition. I've subtly hinted at my dreams on here before... raising chickens, living on a farm, and now... I've moved on to another dream. Are you ready?

5thwheelRV

Remember Justin has that new truck that can pull a beast like this. I want to take my family on a vacation across the US in a pull behind RV. I can hear you laughing. I told Erika a couple weeks ago... she died laughing. She said, "You must have forgotten about Hornet. How are you going to sleep in an RV with your kids and Hornet?" I'm not really sure but I could probably figure it out.

We would start here in Alabama and travel west to and through Texas. Then we would continue west to Arizona and then north to Utah and then east to Colorado then further east through Nebraska and then to Missouri and onto Illinios so we could stop at the farm and say "hey" to my parents. Then we would turn right and head south through Kentucky, Tennessee and back to Alabama. Doesn't that sound like fun? I told Justin I bet some of y'all would let us park it in your driveway for a night or two, right?

What do you daydream about? Really... I'd like to know. Did you know that less than 1 percent of y'all ever comment? To be exact in the last 2 days only .03% of y'all have commented and usually it's the same people... which I'm always grateful for. So take a second and tell me something that you'd like to do... it can be totally absurd.

Ok, back to reality.

Darby - I love your blog! I'm a dreamer too...and convinced one day they'll come true! Some more far-fetched than others - ha! Last week I mentioned to a friend that I thought it would be fun to ride along with a trucker for a day or two - she nearly hyperventilated with laughter.

Oh I dream. Alot. And, like your Dad, if I think about them long enough I usually take steps to make them reality. Dreaming reminds me to be hopeful for things yet to come.

About your dream, I think it is hilarious, but sounds fun. We have an RV, but keep it parked on our land at the river. It is so fun to go stay in on the weekends. One day we hope to build a weekend getaway on our land, there I go dreaming again!

Love the new header too!

Hey Darby,

I'm a dreamer too! One of my dreams was to have a place in Vermont - and we made that happen (still can't believe it!)

Another dream of mine is to travel more - to discover new places (Australia!) and to return to the sites we've really loved (England, Italy, South Africa!)

Your dream (plan?) sounds like good one! My grandparents had an RV and saw the country together when they retired.

Love your blog! :)

Okay, fine. I'll comment. I've been reading your blog for several weeks now and love it! My dreams are three: to teach English literature and Bible in an all-girls-school, to somehow get involved in the lives of orphans, and to write a novel about God's permeating presence in the lives of those who think He's farthest from them. I like to think I'm slowly working toward these dreams!(P.S. I'm Jack Mazzola's little sister. I found your blog through Ericka's!)

I've had so much fun reading your blog over the last few months. You are a great storyteller!

As for dreams, let's see . . . lately, it's finding a new house that right for us and getting the baby's new teeth all the way through (meaning that I'm dreaming about sleep . . .).

My dream is to live on a farm and have goats and alpacas. I lived in the NC mountains last year and some folks who lived near me had goats. My favorite part of the day was driving by their place to see what the goats were up to. And alpacas are just as adorable...have you ever seen their lashes?! My husband thinks I'm crazy.

Love your blog! My ultimate dream would be to fly from Florida to Seattle and travel by car down the entire west coast. Travel down PCH, visit vinyards and have lunch at every trendy place I pass. My husband had rather load up the boat and head to the gulf coast. Oh well...a girl can dream can't she?

You know- sans the camper, I have always wanted to do the same thing. I would love to go down Route 66 and see the Grand Canyon from ground level (versus an airplane). And I think that sounds like a great idea. My only anti-camper idea is thing is that everything is super small. Jason's parents have a GREAT one, but it's not quite like a hotel, fluffed pillow and a mint! But I'm with you on the travel!

That's so funny. Just ealier this year, I told Al that I wanted to travel with the youngsters, a 5thwheel and the Bronco. Or, we could retire, renovate a teardrop and follow the Tarheels around. I threw in UNC hoping that I'd hook him with that. My too practical husband said, "The Bronco only gets 11 mpg as it is. We'd have to get something else to pull it." That's not a flat out "No." right? And, then he followed it up with, "Do you know how small those things are inside?" That was him letting me down easy. Dang.

OKAY, I'll comment.

I dream of being a wedding planner - sometimes I dream that I've skipped over the annoying "starting a business" bit and just get to the fun stuff.

I think that is a wonderful idea and if anyone could pull it off it would be you! My sister and I are about to do something just as crazy, we are driving from Alabama to New Hampshire in a van with 33 rescue dogs. Yes, I know, insane. Check out our blog about the trip

I blame Google Reader for my lack of commenting :)

I daydream about our house. We bought it a couple months ago, and I like to think of all the things I can do to it. Reading decor blogs doesn't help any!

PS--You can bunk with us here in Missouri!

(I deleted my first comment because I put "bunk wit us," and I didn't want you thinking we Missourians are hillbillies!)

I've always loved the idea of RV'ing. We went with my husband's family from Austin to the Grand Canyon and back in a RV a few years ago, and it is so much fun. If you ever do it, I've got some great recommended stops for you and some wonderful websites and books to reference!

My dream is to live on a farm. Grow vegetables, climb trees and enjoy the land. Of course, if I was to REALLY dream, this farm would be on the gulf coast!

I would love to travel the US. However, I want an Airstream...I love all their silverness(is that really a word?) If y'all decided to travel thru GA y'all could stay with us. Okay, we don't have a driveway(downfall of living in a historic house/neighborhood)but you could make camp on our street!

You're inspirational! I've never commented but how can I resist with a post like this?
You didn't mention Washington in your itinerary, but if you decide to add the pacifc northwest to your dream, you can park in my driveway. :-)

I dream of quiting my job so I have enough time to do things like sew more, cook and bake new things, paint some rooms in my house that I just need to freshen up. Mostly I'd love to just be at home. (And I realize that doesn't sound very adventursome, but it sounds delightful to me).

I have always wanted to do the RV roadtrip. Long before I even had kids I thought it would be fun. Now that I have them I think of all of the fun memories that we could be making with something like that. If you ever do make your way out to AZ I would love it. You could park your rig right outside. :)

I'm not laughing, because I think it sounds so fun! I've driven from San Diego to Ocean City, NJ before, and I want to do a Southern roadtrip next. My big dream is to have a lake house someday and fly people there for some R&R, waterskiing, pontoon rides and great food. I've been so blessed by people who have more than me, and I would love to be able to bless people by letting them experience my favorite thing in the world. Of course, I want it for myself and my future family, too! I know someday my grandma's lake house will have to be sold (too expensive for my parents to keep), but I want to carry on the love of the lake. :)

Oh my goodness, my husband and I have the same dream- There is a show that use to be on Discovery Health about a family who sold there big house and is now traveling around the US (and they are normal, not hippies!)I also have a dream of owning a scrap metal yard, but that is a whole nother story (I think it has something to do with making money off of nothing)

Yep, I dream... A LOT.

My husband and I have always shared the same dream of one day packing up and starting fresh in an all-new place. (Preferably he'd have a job in that place first, so not completely cold turkey).

I'd love to take a few months and rent a house in Italy... or Greece.

This is so silly... but I dream about randomly meeting Martha Stewart and her offering me a job... LOL

Love it! My husband has this dream of owning an RV too and since we both went to Auburn as well, he wants to name it "Erin's Eagle"! It really would be fun to load up the kids and travel across country like that. Hope you guys make that dream a reality one day and you're welcome to park it here in Franklin, TN for a little visit, too!

more babies - i have one stinker and cant wait for more. and i also share the rv across the country dream. my parents always wanted to take us on one, and for one reason or another we never went, so its still a childhood dream of mine! oh, and i guess it comes with the territory (being an interior designer) that one HUGE dream is to one day either a)build a house or b)completely renovate one. whats money got to do with it anyway :)

I know this doesn't sound like a dream---but its my ultimate. I daydream that we'd have enough money for me to quit work and be a stay-at-home mom to our 3.5 and 1.5year-old kids. It breaks my heart all the moments I miss when I'm at work.

So, you caught me.... I follow your life through your blog and I have never commented, but I feel compelled to today because I am a big daydreamer. Thank you for sharing your self with us, I look forward to your posts. Jess

I have always been a dreamer too...some of them have come true, others I am still dreaming about! I don't think your idea is crazy at all, we have an RV and have talked for a few years about doing a cross country trip. The one thing we didn't really consider was how my husband was going to take so much time off of work and be able to fund this adventure!:) I think it will still work out one day. We have still had a great time doing weekend trips and trips to the happiest campground on earth (aka WDW). Keep dreaming and let us know which ones come true!

My dream may sound CRAZY but here it goes...My husband and I (both born and raised in VA our WHOOOLE ENTIRE LIVES) were expecting our first born child. We were living in our custom built home that we loved and owned right by our dear family and friends. Life was grand:)... I was maybe a few months pregnant when we started discussing moving. It was ALWAYS our dream to live in an oceanfront house by the beach in... get this...CALIFORNIA! Yeah, keep on dreamin right?!!...Well, I'm more of the go getter type. Before I knew it, I had a newborn baby, My hubby quit is 6 figure job, we packed up an almost 3000sq ft house so that our new TENANT could move in (yup we rented our house out), and we began our treck to CALI...JOBLESS btw!!!! We packed a HUUUUUGE Penske truck, drove cross country with a CRAZY DOG, and settled into a beach bungalow a few blocks from the beach WITH ocean views. I am typing this now as I sit on our porch watching the ocean. I could go alllll day long about the details/family reaction/job hunting stories, but I wanted to keep it short. My hubby found an AMAZING job with Oceanside Glass Tile and we could not be happier!!!!

Okay, now that I'm finally at home (ironing - what a first time homemaker am I?)...I'll comment, too. Yes, we, too are dreaming of land. I mean 20 acres! We want to find us "some land," build a farmhouse, and plant a garden. My whole family wants to be in on it. I am tired of suburbia and ready for some pristine acreage! Also, I too dream of taking my kids to all the national parks! Adam and I have LOVED our two trips out west, and we are planning another for Spring '10 (yes, with a 1-yr old). Lovin' these recent blogs, Darby!

I frequently talk about owning several homes: one in the mountains, one on the beach, one on a ranch, and one in the city! Perfection!

I also had a dream of owning a pig, like on Charlotte's Web, but my husband squashed that one & the swine flu didn't help any! A pig on a golf course is darling, don't you think?

But I've also had other unrealistic dreams such as being a bullrider; what happened to teacher and nurse?

My most realistic dream is of course the one I NEVER say, opening a sweet, little home goods store, that's always feeling festive! Hopefully, that will be the case one day!

Hi Darby,

I'm an 03' UGA grad in Atlanta and LOVE your blog. I do not, however, love your idea of the RV trip. That's sort of my worst nightmare as I am notsomuch a good car rider! My dream is to take my social work years with foster children and AIDS patients and write a book, honoring their stories and their lives. My fiance thinks when I 'stay at home' with our children, I can then have the "time" to write. We'll see how that goes!

aferna said...

I think it is a wonderful idea. We took our three children on many road trips and considered it a part of their education. Sometimes it would be in a van and at other times it was a camper. They are 27, 32, and 34 now and often speak fondly of those family vacations.
Actually, we took the circle that you speak of but a counterclockwise version.
We drove up Pike's Peak, visited Florissant Fossil Beds and Durango. Oh, how I love Durango...went back on another trip to ride the train. We went to Mesa Verde...the kids were loving it! Seriously! We saw Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon.........
We took them to Old Tucson, oh my, was it hot. Hotter than LA; that is for sure!
Your dream is not hilarious to me. I would go with you in a heartbeat.
This sixty year old woman gets much inspiration and enjoyment from your wonderful storytelling.
PS Rocky Mountain National Park is a must see!

I dream of having our own house one day with thick lush green grass and a beautiful garden I finally know how to grow with jasmine creeping up the walls. We are military and have been moving every 2-3 years and will continue to do so for at least another 6. Maybe we can settle in TN or north AL. We loved living in Huntsville. Right now we are in FL where nobody has a lawn and it's depressing when we go to neighborhoods that have lush green grass you can walk barefoot in.

Darby, you should go for the RV dream. My parents, as straight laced as you could imagine, in the 1970s decided to quit their jobs and leave the little Illinois town that they lived in when I was probably about 6 months old. They bought an RV and traveled the entire US, looking around for a new place to live. Along the way, they visited lots of relatives and saw all the sights. I think the only downside was I walked a little later than most kids, because I was in a moving RV a lot. My mom looks back on it and thinks she was out of her mind at the time, but I think its a wonderful family memory for everyone (but me, since I was too little to remember). They ended up settling in Florida, and loved it. So, go for it. Your dream isn't as crazy as my parents, and their's worked out fine. Your kids would also enjoy the trip and remember it. What a wonderful way to learn all about the US! If both my husband and I are laid off in this economy, I already told him I would love to take a road trip around the US. No RV, but the same idea.

My other dreams. I would love to quit my job and work less hours. I would love to have kids in the not too distant future. I would love to buy a vacation home on Cape Cod. And I really want to travel. There is so much more of the US (and the world) that I would love to see. I'll stop there, this is becoming a book.

ok, well since you asked...I have commented a couple of times but don't always. Although, i do always read your blog. I do want to say thank you for sharing your love for Jesus Christ on your blog. It is encouraging for me to read as I daily try to surround myself with christian people, music, etc. I am listening to Rachel Barkey's video now as I write. It is amazing to me at the stregth God has given to her to speak of her death as she is. It is going to take me forever now to write this as I can't stop listening to her. Can I said "wow!" Amazing video...thank you for sharing.
Ok, on to my dreams. I, like you, do dream a lot! I don't always share my dreams b/c they are that...dreams. Here are the not so serious ones...
1. I also would like to own a camper and take my family camping on the weekends.
2. I love to travel and would like to go anywhere possible.
3. I would also like to own at least 5 acres or more with chickens, dogs, cats and maybe a goat or a cow for fresh milk. : )
4. I love the beach and if I couldn't have the farm would like to live on the beach.
Here are the more serious ones...
1. I would like to one day be able to stay home and homeschool my children being able to teach them about the Lord every minute of the day.
2. I would like to have more than 2 children...my husband only wants two and honestly would probably just be happy with the one that we have now. But, I believe that is part of our calling by God is to have children and raise them to know, love and serve Him.
3. I want to have the faith of Rachel Barkey...my grandmother was a missionary and I once felt called to that. I want to live a life and have the fire for Christ that I see in speakers such as Beth Moore.

Ok, this is probably getting long...I am sure I could share more but there is a few. Have a great day and God Bless!

I've had the RV dream for a while now! I'm just having a hard time getting my husband to commit to driving....cause I'm sure not going to!
I'm now on to the farm dream. This is something that my husband DOES want to do. I really do too, but I worry about schools for the kids.
Always something holding me back, but I should really just take the plunge!

I'm a sporadic commenter... I will get better.

The summer before my 4th grade year, my mom packed me and my 3 other siblings, along with her and my grandmother into a van and we traveled this exact journey. Yes, a van. No, fancy shmancy motor home, although that would have been killer. To this day, it is one of my favorite trip I've ever been on. We had the time of our lives, even with the cabin fever, broken window in the cold Colorado and frequent potty breaks. I say go for it. Maybe wait for them to get older so they can enjoy the experience, but DO IT. It will be the best thing for you all!!!!!

My dream... to go to Africa. Live in a tiny hut and eat rice cereal just so I can breathe in new life and culture and share my faith with them. now, THATS crazy talk!! (not the faith part)

I love to day dream. Mostly about decorating our house we bought last year and starting a family. I love to picture myself as a mom and my husband the father of my children. It's makes me so excited that it's a dream that will hopefully come true in the near future. I also like to dream about traveling the world, something we are working on before the kids come!

So many dreams....so little money to make them all come true!! I think the first thing I would do (if I were to wint the lottery that I don't play) would be to buy my dream home and have the insides ripped out and redone. Dont worry, I am pretty sure I would hire your sister and yourself to do the majority, if not all, of the design work! And my daughter would LOVE a horse. That is her dream. So I see there being a few horses in the land that I would live on. I could sit on my huge porch, drink my coffee, watch the horses in the field and listen to the river. Oh man...what a nice day dream. I better get back to reality and laundry! :) Thanks for the opportunity to dream today.

This is a fabulous idea! My Dad's family (three boys) took a pop-up camper from Arkansas to the Pacific Ocean when he was a kid. That trip is somehow referenced at nearly every family get-together to this day -- 30 years (at least) later! Life-long memories.

I want to live on a farm too. I was thinking about it last night while shucking corn on my suburban front porch ...

I am a dreamer too...sometimes I think maybe it's ADHD ;) Seriously, my life right now may look like chasing a dream of owning land, chickens, planting a garden, making homemade bread, and using what I know to make all-natural concoctions for my family and friends...but really it is following the Lord's lead to sell our beautiful, custom home in the cushy neighborhood with all the creature comforts (that we just moved into 2 years ago last week!)....it really is true that no matter how comfortable we are, we are not called to live the privelaged life, but rather to walk the pilgrim way. I long for deep satisfaction in following Him and being obedient to His will for me. So maybe dreams are a little bit placed in our hearts by the Lord in His love and desire for us as His children?
By the way, those frosted banana bars are dangerous territory! I am trying to resist making another batch today-what else am I going to do with the bananas no one wants to eat? :0

My dream would be to somehow simplify my life. My husband and I both come from farming families. He is a farmer on his farm, and I do the books for my farm. And our farms are an hour-and-a-half apart. This time of year is so busy for both of us that we hardly see each other (maybe once a week) and we both hardly see the kids -- although I get to see them way more than Brad does. I would love to find some way to lead a more "normal" life! I just don't know how that will happen...

Hey Darby! I am a total dreamer just like you are. Problem is... my dreams need lots of funding to make them reality! As for trips I would love to take my family on, I would LOVE to go to a dude ranch. I would also love to build a little lake house, for our family to take trips to.

Since my husband is in the Marine Corps lots of my day dreams center around my dream house that we plan to build when he retires from the USMC and we get to settle down.

Love your blog by the way!

I forgot to add too that lately I have been day dreaming about what it will be like to NOT be pregnant anymore.

Is that bad?

9 more weeks to go!!!

Definitely a dreamer. I would love to road trip across the US, but I don't know if that would happen any time soon. I also dream a lot about home projects I want to tackle, but the husband makes me put those off since we're renting right now. I really want to buy the house we're renting since our house in the US sold. If I can convince the husband, then maybe some of my dreams will become reality!

Darby, I love your blog and have suggested it to several of my friends.

My parents own an RV and my sister and I grew up going on trips just like the one you want to take so of course I don't think you are crazy. I still remember how much fun those trips were and all the amazing things we got to see.

And I will admit to having dreams, my current one is to move to the family farm and go totally off the grid. Of course I don't know how that is going to work out with me loving to shop and this little obsession I have with handbags and shoes....I don't think I can wear my heels while I feed chickens.

My dreams have to do with traveling too. But I want to live overseas for at least a year and i want to take all kinds of crazy trips. Like snowboarding in New Zealand, hiking the AT, backpacking across Europe, going skydiving in Austraila, etc. The list could go on :)

Darby - I LOVE your blog too! I am sorry I have never left a comment before but I read your blog everyday. Your life is so inspirational! I hope that one day I can have such a lovely existence. I tell my future hubby all about how precious your kids are and how great your recipes are! This then leads to our nightly conversation of when are we going to leave new york, move back to the south and start our family! This takes me to the height of my dreamer stage where I envision our house, all the fun I will have decorating it, and my big kitchen where I can try all the recipes I have accumulated. I am also currently reading Same Kind of Different as Me and am close family friends with Ron Hall...such a wonderful story. I am from Fort Worth and have volunteered at the Union Gospel Mission myself many times. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the book! I will comment more from now on. Thanks for your blog, it is such a nice respite from the corporate New York City grind

hello. regular commentor here. dream...oh yes. i dream. i dream of a day when not a single spanking will be given out and no one will talk back to me. i dream of the day where i can escape my cottage (that i dream of having) only to visit another shore. i dream of going to places like seattle and NYC and charleston and savannah. places i can't go right now, but as soon as these kids are in school, i am there. i dream of alone time b/c these days, i'm feeling pretty inundated with multiple small children. i dream of a house where they can all have their alone time and not have to be together alllll the time. (ok...probably not what you wanted to hear...)

i dream of a money tree, places to go, toes in sand, sunset swinging with my honey, sweet tea, cute pictures to document it, a weekend of pillaging the best antiques and thrift stores...

I've been reading for months....makes me feel like someone else lives the wonderful (but sometimes overwhelming and other times boring) life of a mom. I dream and yours sounds great....but let me just tell you, my parents too had your dream and we did it! You should see the pictures of my brother, sister and me on the verge of killing each other. Priceless....I think my parents eventually left us in the RV and visited Opryland child free! They decided that was a dream they should have fulfilled after we all went to college, ha! We still talk about that trip at holiday dinners 25 years later...so it was worth every minute.

While I would never want to RV across this great nation, I know a lot of people who do! It would be fun. I have spent 2 weeks in high school w/my best friend and her family going through CA. Funny stories are still told.

My dreams (and my prayer every day)are for my husband and I to both have careers we are passionate about. To live somewhere where we can own a home and live a slower paced life, to travel to Europe before we have kids (don't pray about the Europe part).

I feel like God created me to change the world to bring glory to His kingdom and His name, and my dream is to fulfill that calling in my lifetime.

I'm such a fan of your blog!

I dream about all kinds of things. I think a lot about going back to Paris, where I studied abroad as a college student. It's like I yearn for it -- I can't hardly stand to watch shows on TV about it, because i want to go back so very badly. ::sigh::

I also daydream about what project I could do next to our house. This morning, it was ripping out the wallpaper in our bathroom and painting it turquoise. Hmm. We'll see what The Hubs thinks about that one!

Okay, you convinced me to comment finally. Love your blog and the candid way you share about your family and faith. It's very encouraging and inspiring. Keep it up, please!

I too would love to travel across the country in an rv. In fact, I looked into renting one a couple months ago to go visit friends in North Carolina (from Oklahoma) and came to the sad realization that we could stay in VERY nice hotels for less money than it would cost to rent an rv. It just wouldn't be the same, though.

I dream of growing vegetables and flowers to sell on our 5 acres that we live on. I think this will be a great job for our children when they are older. They'll learn about hard work and running a business all from the safety of our home ;).

Darby-
I think that Ive commented before but not quite sure. I found your blog through Rebekah Wright's. (college and church friends in Knoxville)
Thank you for your honesty in who you are and thank you for sharing your family life with us all.

You and my husband have the same dream, RV, chickens, travel.
I have similar dreams, Id love to own some land and build a house for my family and friends to find respite in, I love to garden and create with my hands as well.
I once read an article in Real Simple about a family that saved for several years, then quit their jobs and took a trip around the world in one year. They had saved something like 100K and still ran out of money.
I have never forgotten that story, and I have since started a savings account just for a piece of that adventure "one day" when my girls are old enough to remember it well.
It seems like many of us want to travel, but I think that a good part of me really likes to be at home. I dream to always be a hospitable place for others to land and to feel refreshed.

Its nice to "meet" you, and I hope that all your comments give you a little bit of happiness :)

My dream is to write a children's book...about happy kids in a happy family....(loosely based on my life...I have one chapter)because so many books for kids seem so depressing to me. As for your dream...you should read Mike Leonard's book....The Ride of Our Lives...he goes ona a trip like you dream about with his family...and his elderly parents. It's funny and poignant. If you can do it with elderly parents...you can do it with little ones....plenty of places along the way to stop and run around!

In our old one the size would of been fine if it was set up different. I stressed everytime we took it out after having our daughter, but when we took out the new one it was a lot better!!! Oh,if you ever take that vacation you are welcome to park in our driveway!!!

I’ve been keeping up with your blog for a couple of weeks now and I just LOVE it. Thanks for sharing your family with us! This is the first time I’ve had the “guts” to leave a comment.

As far as dreams go, I’ve got a few and the majority of them aren’t too lofty. For starters, I would love for our March morning wedding to become a reality (bf’s broken leg and job loss have set us back a few months) and for it to be an intimate experience with close friends and family. Secondly, I would love to purchase a little house with some land. Nothing too extravagant, just a little place where we can enjoy ourselves and entertain on the weekends without having neighbors too terribly close. Finally, I would LOVE to make a quilt. I’ve been saving scraps of my favorite fabrics, so when this finally comes to fruition I’ll be ready to go. I don’t mean just one quilt! It’s going to be one of those things I don’t stop once I finally learn how to do it!

Having said all of that, I’m constantly working on being content in each stage of my life and not believing that I have yet to “arrive”. Many times, the world pushes one to believe that life’s circumstances have to line up perfectly before one can be fulfilled, but that’s simply not true. “This is the day the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24

So, after re-reading this, I ask myself why I chose to major in Accounting??

I'm short on time, so I didn't read everyone else...my dreams? more of the practical side.

I dream of a whirlpool tub and walk-in closet one day, and an energy efficent home (our house is 1960s and the unit isn't sized right for our funky split level- its ALWAYS hot)

But after my girls are grown? I dream of building water filters in places like south america where thier water is most from cisterns (collected rainwater). you can build filters out of concrete and sand and give people clean drinking water...I am praying about it and trying to find the right organization.

I also want to get off my duff and dream of running a marathon before I am 40 (I turn 37 this year)

I don't comment much simply b/c I feel like i don't have much to add...I love your decorating/renovating style and am learning much from you. Thanks so much!

I dream about:
*Buying a large boat to enjoy on Lake MI so we can have a place to spend quality family time with the kids when they are older.
*Buying 20 acres of property in central MI, building a little rustic cabin and letting the kids enjoy being outside in the fresh air, play on the quads or go fishing(again a place to spend quality time when the kids get older).
*My dream sewing studio.. where I can teach kids and their mom's how to sew. This one is coming closer to a reality.. I have a sewing studio in my basement, with 4 sewing machines (it is nice having that many machines, I leave 3 machines threaded with black, white, grey thread)I just need 2 more so I can get a nice size group.. we are going to install counter tops along the walls with my large cutting table in the center of the room. A little bit of new paint on the walls.. some cork/message boards (to hold up pattern instructions), some new desk chairs, a lot of electical outlets and I will be good to go .. hopefully this time next year I will be teaching my first class.

Love your blog!!

Hey Darby, you probably wouldn't remember me from Auburn; I was in the 95 pledge class, so I remember you girls when y'all pledged, but I know it's always harder to remember people who were older. My maiden name was Hawkins. Anyway, I was just thinking y'all should go for the whole RV so you can go park in Auburn for game weekends! My husband always wanted to do the RV cross country thing because he did it as a kid- his grandparents actually own one. I have told him the only way he could convince me to ever purchase one is the tailgating thing. But that's not my dream; it's my husband's dream that I try to get on board with! I just can't imagine trying to drive one of those things! (I also realize I'm talking about these as if they were just so easy for us to go out and buy! Silly me!) But I guess I am still trying to figure out what my dream is :) I figured I would comment though, since I am sure you wonder who in the world is reading your blog. I think I started reading about a month ago after I kept hearing Rebekah Wright and Jennie Ray talk about your great ideas. I always like your posts, your yummy looking recipes and cutie sewing ideas. And I so want to track down some of that owl fabric. It's super cute! I hope y'all get to go on your trip- I know it would be such a fun time for your kiddos, and something they'd remember forever!

I love your blog! I am not a mom nor do I plan to be anytime soon but your blog almost makes me want a family!! It also reminds me of how my mom was with us when we were little.

Anyway I love the RV idea and think it would be great for the family. I live in Iowa and my parents live on a large acreage - you can park the RV anytime.

MaryBeth said...

I wanted to do that a few years ago and my friends laughed at me. I built 2 masterbaths so I wouldn't have to share with my husband, I don't think I could survive in an RV with everybody. But it still sounds like a lot of fun in theory. MB

Darby,
I have a very wild imagination which leads me to dream up dreams that are larger than life. Lately, I'm dreaming about painting these beautiful, detailed portraits but I can't draw to save my life. I'm dreaming about playing every instrument known to man but I don't have any rhythm. And I'm dreaming a lot about becoming a very successful writer...which I can write pretty well when I want to so that's not the craziest thing I have ever thought up.
But I'm actually acting on these dreams: I bought myself paints and canvases on which I have painted some of the most unattractive stick figures you've ever seen. At least I'm trying.
I'm taking piano lessons this summer.
And I'm going back to school to become an English teacher which can only help stimulate any creative writing I have in me.
Maybe you'll get your RV cross country road trip! I hope so.

today i am dreaming about houses....

practically, one that's not so old that none of the door shut properly (especially the bathrooms...arg)

wishfully, one that's big enough to homeschool our kid(s) in someday!

we had a pop-up camper growing up and it was the best. what a way to make some memories!!!

Today I'm dreaming about when I will get my shower....ha ha!! I thought a busy mom like you would appreciate that! I dream about simple things, seeing my girls grow up, who they will marry, what they will become. I guess these are more deep rooted prayers than dreams! If you are in the Memphis area with that HUGE RV you are welcome to park in our LONG driveway! HA!

I love your blog! I am a lurker, first time commenter!

I dream of being a mother. It sounds so simple but that is my simple dreams these days. I want to be a mother to 2-3 kids, stay at home with them doing art projects and playing make believe. In my dream we live in a old, big white house on lots of land and it is always summer time and green.

A simple dream but hopefully a reachable one!

Hey Darby - I've been glued to your blog for the past couple of months now, and actually remember you and Erika from Auburn (probably from rush). I think I'm just a year ahead of y'all. I don't think we ever met in person, though I know we have several mutual friends.

I love to daydream about having an apartment in NYC. My husband and I got engaged there, and we go there frequently enough that it would only make sense to always have our own place to stay, right?? I dream about where in the city I want it to be, how I would decorate it, and at which times of the year I like being up there the best.

And...I hope this makes you laugh and not cringe, but twice in the last month I've had dreams at night that we've met/are friends. I think I just feel like I know you already because you are so real on your blog. Thanks for all your encouraging words and fun posts. Maybe one day we really will meet in person. :)

You get WAY more comments than i ever get.At least you have followers. AND you can park in our driveway down here in Texas anytime. we have a HUGE shop that you could park in with a 50's style diner, juke box and all!! Lots to see and do in Houston...check out my memorial day post on Galveston. I have always been a dreamer too.

I have the same dream too! I would love to drive across the country in a RV with the family. No one comments on my blog either and then friends and family walk up and say I read it on your blog. Love reading your blog!

I have been reading your blog for about a year now and I absolutely love it, you have a beautiful family and home.
I dream of being able to take a year off from work when my youngest daughter starts kindergarten so that I can attempt to be a room mother and go on field trips and attend special programs. I am a teacher and all of the parties and programs fall during my class times, so it would be a dream to be able to take off and be there for her during her first year of school and have a clean and organized home. The clean and organized part is more of a dream than taking the year off :-)

Second I love that I can see that you love the Lord!! Third you appear to live a wonderful life! Lucky you!

I dream of having kids someday, I dream about retiring by the ocean, I dream of living near my family one day, I dream about designing a house and not a 3 bedroom house more like a 5 bedroom house! I look at other people's blog and dream dream dream!!- Carol

Hi, Darby. I visit your blog often and have only commented a couple times. Thanks for the encouragement. I know it makes my day to get comments on my blog so I need to make sure I am doing it for others.
I, too, am a serious dreamer. My husband and I both are, which makes life very interesting! : ) I dream about all of the things I want to do to my house to make it more us. I dream about my next child. I dream about a getaway with my husband (could actually happen after I finish nursing my little man). I dream about my Mom and my in-laws living down the street. I dream about planning my daughter's wedding with her. I dream about being a photographer "for real". I dream of having something published, anything. Oh, I could go on and on, but this comment is already WAY too long!
I'll just get back to my dreams now. : )

Gosh, I have had my nose to the grindstone raising kids so much that I don't think I have even thought about dreaming. But now that you mention it, I'd love for my husband to be able to win the lottery or something (we never play, so that won't happen) and be able to retire. I so want to enjoy a relaxed pace with him right by my side and me by his. I pray that we live long enough to enjoy our later years.
Go for the RV!!

I'm a daily reader, but don't comment often because I read your blog from work, but I'm not allowed to "post" content to the web! I rarely remember all of things I want to comment on after getting home. I love your blog.

My family goes camping at the beach each summer for our vacation and I cannot imagine not having an RV. We have a 2 year old daughter and she loves it. She was a spitfire, too and we've always had more laughs than stress. We haven't ever taken it on a cross-country road trip, but I sure would love to!

Melissa said...

Not a frequent commenter, but a frequent e-mailer, does that count?!? I dream of having as many commenters as you! I'm having a giveaway and have still only managed to get five comments! Seriously, I LOVE your RV dream. I never thought I would be into something like that, but my husband has convinced me of how cool it would be to have a nice RV. I don't camp (like in a tent, roughing it), but I have decided I think I could do the RV. At least then I'd never have to worry about finding a hotel room that's CLEAN! My dreams: (1) To travel and sing gospel music. I grew up loving southern gospel music, and have been singing all my life. Just in church, but I would love to do it semi-professionally. (2) I want to own a little print shop, making postcards, invitations, greeting cards, etc. Would probably do some heat press stuff too, like we do in my desktop publishing class. Maybe even embroidery, even though I have no clue about that part! The print shop "might" become a reality when I retire in 20 years or so!

Darby, you should definitely do the RV vacation! My husband and I just drove our camper converted Honda Element from Colorado to Guatemala, all along the Mexican coast and it was the most amazing adventure we'll ever have. Granted we don't have kids yet, but we know we'll be hitting the road again one day with our kids and pets in tow! If we were still in Colorado, we'd definitely let you park in our driveway for a few days!

do i dream?! my husband might say that my entire life consists of 80% dreaming and 20% reality... but then he's probably being gracious! i am a born dreamer, always been and most likely always will be. but as i get older i am learning to temper my dreams with enjoying real life and what i actually have. i could spend hours daily dreaming of living in other places, how that would be, what my house would look like, where the children would go to school... dreaming of what to plant in the garden, what animals we should have, what clothes to buy, what cake to bake... those are more realistic dreams and i find that the dream which is attainable is now more fulfilling, unlike my younger years when dreaming morphed into pinning for something not reasonable and therefore often ended in a mini heartache. i guess you could say i now love dreaming of things which are (even if by a stretch) fairly attainable. and I love to see my kids dreaming too! i think after 8 years, my husband is even catching the dreamy bug.

We too once had the RV dream (more my husband's, but his dreams are mine). We have the big truck too. He has looked into renting one. The rise in fuel costs has squelched the idea of buying one for us.
My dreams are scattered, some of them are opening a restaurant, going back to school for Nurse Practitioner (I'm an RN), going back to work part-time at one of Atlanta's Children's hospitals, actually traveling again (We are an airline family and my husband and I used to travel ALOT!), a ministry at our church similar to M&M kids club at yours, losing weight.....I could go on and on. I guess that we are supposed to pray that God reveals to us just what we are supposed to pursue and opens those doors!

When I was 12 and my sister 15 (boy did she love leaving her new boyfriend!) we spent 4 weeks going across the country and back. Skip forward to years later and I suggested a similar trip to my husband. After having recently moved from the west coast to the east coast, "chasing" the moving van (boy, do they move) in our small minivan with 3 kids, two dogs and a pet rat (the entire reason we didn't fly) my husband said "ah....no." He had a point.

Darby - I read your blog all the time and absolutely love the way you love your God, family and friends. I want you to know that I think you should go for your dream. Life is too short to sit around waiting on what you want - especially when you can go out there and get it! When I was twelve, my family loaded up a motor home and hauled our group of 5 from Alberta, Canada to Seattle and down the entire west coast (with an obligatory stop at Disney Land, of course!) all the way to Mexico. Then we came back up through Arizona and Las Vegas back to Alberta. It was the trip of a lifetime and one I will never forget. There is nothing better than sitting around a campfire with your family knowing that you are on the greatest adventure together.

That trip planted my travel seed and I will forever be grateful to my parents for the opportunity to see and experience America the way we did. Y'all Should Go for it!!!

I love to dream about living on a farm with a few goats, maybe some chickens and a pig that never gets big (it is a dream, right?!). I would spend my days working in the flower garden (and sell my beautiful flowers at a farmers market) and my husband would work in the vegetable garden and then make delicious dinners. At night we would sit on the front porch on a glider and read and enjoy the always wonderful weather. The one problem about this dream is that when you have a farm and animals you can't go on vacation and I love to travel!

Hi Darby! It's been so long since we've chatted, but I read your blog (and Erika's too) all the time.

So I have so many dreams that I struggle to pick just one to share...travel dreams, house dreams, professional dreams. How about travel to fit the theme? Even though I get nervous about open water and sea life, I really want to sail through the Caribbean with my husband Stephen. We don't know how to sail. Maybe that is somewhere to start...

Sometimes in this dream it is the two of us roughing it, catching fish, sunburnt, and sometimes it is the two of us on a fancy boat with a crew that cleans and cooks for us :)

I am married with four young children, and we have a pull-behind. We have never done cross-country traveling but do use the camper often. We got it when our youngest was a few months old (he is now 2). This will be our third summer enjoying it. It is a lot of work with young ones but so very worth it! Some of our most fond memories are from camping. And as far as sleeping etc. goes, yes, you just figure it out.

Please know you inspire so many!

I have tons of dreams! I want to get married and have lots of kids, and I want to live in a small house on a big piece of land with tons of trees and water--be it a stream, pond, etc.--and animals, and a huge oak tree with a rope swing hanging from its branches. :)

Hi Darby...I am one of your many blog stalkers. I love it. It inspires me to do great things. I don't usually comment but why not. My dream, as simple as it may seem, is to be one of those great moms like Proverbs 31, where her children rise up and call her blessed. It is so easy for me to be idle, so I dream daily, of being a mom who sews, plays, scrapbooks, cooks, loves, is patient and kind even when I'm cranky... You get the picture. That is my dream...at least the one that consumes my thoughts for now!
